Today we had a tutorial with Susan Adkin to discuss the instillation of our piece in Terrace bar and publicity for the event.
Because there are four groups in total displaying in terrace bar Susan suggested that we could just make one poster to advertise the whole evening and make it more of a collaborative project. Sophie Martin from the repetition group is going to make some Riso posters for the event, and Christine in our group is going to make some individual posters just to advertise our film on Facebook.
Because we are having another meeting with Adriano today at 5 we couldn't really discuss displaying our knit as we do not know what limitations terrace bar will have, however Shannon has agreed to put the group ideas forward to him at the meeting as a few of us can't make it and then she is going to feed back to us on our facebook group later tonight.

Meeting at Terrace
Because we couldn't get our first choice venue 2022NQ, we were offered Terrace bar on Thomas street as an alternative. We went for a meeting there today with Adriano to check out the space available and work out how our film and instillation will be displayed.
However Adriano had had different messages from us and from the tutors and thought that we weren't coming to the meeting today so we didn't actually get to talk to him about the space, but we did have a look around ourselves and came up with a few ideas that we can pitch to him and the other groups displaying there tomorrow. I am actually working when the meeting has been scheduled for, but i'ave told Shannon my ideas and she has agreed to pass them on at the meeting.

Building the Knit...
Today we brought all our knit together to construct the mound of knitting for our film. We used a cardigan for the base underneath so that it would be easy for the model to get it on and off, then stitched pieces of knit and wadding on top to form the structure we wanted.
We cut up the knitted garments we had bought and stitched them together in a patchwork way, which then made a good base for us to attach the looser hand knitting onto. We combined different textures and materials together all over the structure, whilst trying to create as much volume and shape to the knit as possible. I am really pleased with our end result, I think that the colours work really well together and the shape we eventually created will look really effective when worn by our model in the film.

Mini Mound
I tried experimenting really quickly with some of my knitting on a mannequin to see what shapes it could create. Its no where near as big as our mound will be but it gave me an idea of what my textures would look like together.

Group Meeting
We are getting quite close to our filming deadline, so we had a meeting today in the art cafe about possible models and locations we could use.
Here are some of the topics we discussed at the meeting...
Models...
Hannah has been emailing a few contacts to see if we could use a life model as we ideally want a woman of between 50-70 to wear our knitted sculpture. However they all charge quite a lot of money per hour and we cannot pay through the university so we decided against that idea. We then asked a few of the older women on the textiles course but as they are all busy completing their own unit x briefs they could not give up a full day to help us film. So we ave decided that we need to ask family members to see if any of them would be willing to model. Melissa's grandma is around the right age and lives fairly close to the university, so she is going to ask her if she would be free to participate in our film. If she can't do it, then Melissa's sister works in a care home and has said that she will ask a few of the residents if they would be able to do it instead.
Location...
Because our knitted mound is already going to be very textured and sculptural, we have decided that we need a clean studio space to film in. Martin is now in charge of booking one of the university studios for the 10th May to film in, then him and Laura can edit over the weekend to have the film done by Monday 13th.
Knit...
We are going to assemble the mound on the 7th so the fashion and textiles girls are going to produce as much knitting as possible over this weekend ready for tuesday. We are doing a combination of arm knitting, finger knitting, hand knitting, machine knitting and found garments in a variety of materials. We are going to source some knitted items from charity shops over the weekend and bring in any of our own jumpers and cardigans to add volume to the mound.

Colour Workshop
Today I signed up for one of the colour workshops with Hermes colour designer Leigh Cooke.
We were asked to bring a selection of materials including paint, brushes, paper and a full colour image. I found it really interesting as he talked about his freelance work that involves research and collecting objects, fabrics and mages that can all then feed into his colour ways. I also really liked his style of working with paint and producing all his colour predictions by hand instead of on the computes as it gives them a much more personal and real feeling. The exercise we had to do was to look at our image and pick out as many colours as we could, then paint these into a colour way that could be used to inspire our collections. i found this really helpful as I struggle to work with colour, so this made me explore different combinations and tones which I will start to apply to my own work in the future.

Change of Venue
Shannon heard back from 2022NQ today, unfortunately another group has already booked out the space for their unit x exhibition, however they did suggest another venue called Terrace in the Northern Quarter that has similar spaces to them. We have decided to provisionally say yes to terrace bar as we are worried we will run out of time trying to find another venue, and are going to arrange a meeting there so that we can see the space and ask some questions about what we will be able to install etc.
